A new garage build designed around the view

Returning to a home we’ve previously renovated is always a great sign we got it right the first time. For this project in Omaha, the homeowners asked CHR Builders back to extend their home with a new multi-purpose garage build and carefully considered hard landscaping.

The brief was clear: create a functional new space without compromising one of the home’s best features, its elevated outlook.

Positioned at the front of the property, the new garage had the potential to interrupt views from the upper level. To avoid this, we designed a low-profile roof with a 5-degree pitch, the minimum allowed under building regulations. This smart design solution ensured the view was protected, while still delivering a fully functional and compliant garage space.

The goal was to make the new garage feel like it had always been part of the home. By carefully matching the existing cladding, the extension blends seamlessly with the original structure in both form and finish. The result is a cohesive addition that enhances the overall look of the home rather than standing out as an afterthought.

More than just a garage

This double garage was designed to be more than a place to park vehicles. Fully carpeted, insulated and double glazed, it includes a heat pump and toilet, creating a comfortable, flexible space.

Perfect for storing vehicles, tools and lifestyle gear, it also doubles as a breakout area for teenagers, a workspace or additional living space when needed.

Hard landscaping and entrance design

The hard landscaping plays a key role in how the property is experienced. A new entrance begins with a custom-built privacy screen, offering both shelter and separation from the street.

From there, a compact deck connects directly to the garage via a ranchslider, creating easy access. New exterior stairs lead up to the main home, with integrated lighting improving safety and usability. Gates and balustrades have been detailed to mirror the deck, creating a consistent and polished finish throughout.

Smart use of space

Sustainability and practicality were considered from the ground up. Two large water tanks were craned onto site and buried beneath the lawn, allowing for efficient rainwater collection without taking up valuable outdoor space.

A cohesive outdoor finish

A landscaper has added subtropical planting to soften the built elements, while decks, pathways, pavers and raised garden beds create flow across the site. Every detail works together to enhance both practical use and visual appeal.
